TRAINING TIPS
Getting a new pup is an exciting time for all of the family, but a lot of people inadvertently do the wrong thing and you would be surprised that within a week or two you have started down the track of letting this pup think that you are grooming it to be TOP DOG. Even if it is the smallest bundle of fluff it still needs to know that YOU ARE THE PACK LEADER.
Remember all dogs need mental and physical stimulation...EXERCISE, ALL DOGS NEED TRAINING and spending time with it's human pack. If these things don't happen you will end up with an unhappy, noisy, out of control dog.
REMEMBER YOU END UP WITH THE DOG YOU HAVE CREATED
1.... HOUSE RULES
You should have had a family meeting before getting your new puppy and deciding on the rule that this pup is going to live by......Where is it going to sleep? Is it going to be allowed on the lounge ext. All of the family MUST keep these rules, or the new pup will become confused, then it will not do as you want. The pup will at some point try and get what it own way by, Barking at you, whinging, Yelping, scratching at the door to get in or out. You DO NOT ANSWER A PUPS DEMANDS, otherwise it will demand more and more from you and you will end up being controlled by the pup.
2.... THE PLACE YOUR PUPPY IS GOING TO SLEEP
Before you bring your puppy home you should have made a place where your puppy is going to sleep. All new puppies, when they are taken will have a few upset nights. Remember the puppies have just left their mother and brothers and sisters and have come from a place where they feel safe, to your home where everything is very strange to them. Your place does not have the smell that they know and sounds or anything that they were used to. This can be very scary to an 8 week old puppy, but what is it that you can do to make the settling in period easy or hard.
I recommend that you sleep your puppy in a DOG CRATE The crate only needs to be big enough for your puppy to stand and turn around in. Most people make the mistake of putting a new puppy in a laundry, toilet or the like, this area is TOO BIG for a baby puppy, it will take longer from them too settle down as it does not feel secure, and YES the pup is SHUT IN THE CRATE. You can place in the create a soft toy or a kong with some treats in it, than COVER the crate with a light weight dark coloured sheet, DO NOT PUT WATER IN WITH IT AT NIGHT. The pup will most likely still have some crying form the first few nights ...So the rules to teach a puppy how to settle down are.........
1) MAKE SURE THE PUPPY HAS GONE TO THE TOILET BEFORE BED
2) TRY TO LET YOUR PUPPY CALM DOWN BEFORE PUTTING IN THE CRATE.. (A puppy that is over exerted is harder to get to settle down)
3) PUT THE PUPPY IN THE CRATE AND COVER IT WITH A LIGHT SHEET
4) IF THE PUPPY CRIES DO NOT SPEAK TO IT, WALK UP TO THE CRATE AND HIT THE TOP OF THE CRATE. (IF puppy goes to sleep and wakes up a few hours later, take it out to see if it needs to go to the toilet, then straight back to the crate) you might take your puppy put once or twice for the first couple of nights to toilet, this will depend on the age of your puppy. If it has been out to the toilet and is making noise DO NOT LET IT OUT. Like a baby you get to know the cry of your puppy one cry is I need to go to the toilet and is I am throwing a tantrum, I want to get of here. The second one you don't let out until it is quiet.
5) IF YOU TAKE YOUR PUPPY OUT TO THE TOILET, GO WITH IT, MOST PUPPIES ARE SCARED OF THE DARK.
6) MOST PUPPIES, ONCE THEY GET USED TO SLEEPING IN A CRATE ARE EASY TO TOILET TRAIN AS THEY DO NOT LIKE TO MESS WERE THEY SLEEP.
7) If you have a cat or another dog, Crating your new pup will give your other pet a chance to look at and get used to it without the new pup jumping all over it.
You will need to have your puppy sleep in its crate for around 4 to 6 weeks depending on the age of the puppy.
If you do not wish to crate train your puppy, make the area that your puppy is going to sleep in SMALL, Just enough room to stand, turn and lay down. The quicker you get your puppy into a good sleeping routine the better.
8) Puppies are more likely to toilet at night if they are in a room because they can get up and move around.
